Since our founding in a one room log cabin in 1859, St. Nicholas Catholic School has strived for over 150 years to provide for the spiritual and academic development of thousands of southeastern Indiana kindergarten through 8th grade students.
It became evident to the parishioners of St. Nicholas Church in Sunman that their children needed a place to study and learn early in the Parish's history. In 1859, the first St. Nicholas School was constructed at 6459 East St. Nicholas Drive, Sunman.
The first school was a log structure which was 36 feet by 26 feet with one room to house all the grades. In 1881, a brick structure was constructed to house the students and there was a living quarters included to house the Sisters who taught at the school. That school was later expanded and modernized and portable units were added for needed space.
Over the years, as enrollment increased and the school building became cost prohibitive to maintain and repair, the Heritage Project was launched under the direction of pastor, Fr. Shaun Whittington. The Heritage Project is a two-phase master building plan that includes an Education Center and Fellowship Center. In 2018, construction began on the new Education Center and was completed and opened its doors to students and staff for the 2019-20 school year.
The parishioners of St. Nicholas are dedicated to giving their children a well-rounded Catholic education. This has been their goal since 1859.
